Bangladesh to sell its frontier mkt tag in HK

FE Report | March 23, 2015 00:00:00

Bangladesh will promote its potential as a new frontier market when investors from across the world descend on Hong Kong today (Monday) to attend an investment conference, officials said.

Dr. Syed Abdus Samad, executive chairman of Board of Investment (BoI), will represent Bangladesh in the 18th Asian Investors Conference, organised by Credit Suisse.

The BoI head will highlight the country's prospect as a frontier market along with three other Asian peers such as - Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Leading investment firm, Morgan Stanley Capital International, in 2013 included Bangladesh on the frontier markets list with 25 other countries. Ratings agency Standard and Poor's, Dow Jones and FTSE also identified Bangladesh as a frontier market with more than two dozens of countries.

A frontier market is a type of developed country, which is more developed than the least developed countries, but too small and considered to be very potential emerging market.

The BoI chief will highlight the country's competitive advantages, macro-economic stability, robust economic growth pattern and comfortable buffer against external shocks. The investment incentives the country offers are considered to be the most competitive in South Asia.

BoI officials said the potential of Bangladesh is enormous - almost on all fronts both as a market and an investment destination. The country is developing as a key export hub in the heart of Asia with access to regional market of about 1.5 billion people through regional and bilateral integration in South Asia.

The BoI chief will also hold meetings with prospective entrepreneurs and institutional investors, encouraging them to invest in areas including the nascent bond market.

More than 3,000 attendees are expected to join this year's AIC, including representatives from over 300 corporate houses and 2,000 institutional, hedge fund and high net worth investors.

A good number of policymakers, political leaders, central bank officials, Nobel laureate economists, philanthropists and even astronauts, are also expected to attend the largest private sector-organized conferences in Hong Kong.
