Banglalink has announced its collaboration with Starlink Mobile to introduce satellite-powered mobile connectivity in Bangladesh, aiming to extend network coverage to remote and underserved areas.
The initiative, subject to regulatory approval, will mark the country's first satellite-to-mobile service.
It is expected to initially support SMS and over-the-top (OTT) messaging, with voice and data services to be introduced at a later stage.
Banglalink said the integration of advanced satellite technology would help eliminate coverage gaps in geographically challenging areas such as hill tracts,
riverine chars, coastal islands and offshore zones, where traditional telecom infrastructure remains difficult to deploy.
The service is also expected to enhance network resilience, particularly during natural disasters, by providing an alternative communication channel when terrestrial networks are disrupted.
Users will be able to stay connected as long as their devices have a clear view of the sky.
Johan Buse, Chief Executive Officer of Banglalink, said the partnership reflects the company's commitment to expanding connectivity.
Certain communities remain beyond the reach of conventional networks due to the country's terrain, and satellite-enabled coverage could help bridge that gap, he noted.
Stephanie Bednarek, Vice President of Starlink Mobile Sales, said Bangladesh would become the third market to deploy the service in partnership with VEON, following earlier rollouts in Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
She further said the collaboration aims to deliver essential communications to millions of people in remote locations.
The move forms part of a broader effort by VEON and Starlink to expand satellite-enabled mobile connectivity across multiple markets, positioning Bangladesh as a key addition to this growing network.
