BASIS president Russell resigns

President of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) Russell T Ahmed stepped down from his position on Thursday, citing personal reasons in a resignation letter submitted to the trade body's executive committee and the ministry of commerce.

In his letter, Ahmed also referred to ongoing blame games within the organisation that, he said, had raised concerns for his safety.

Protests by BASIS employees demanding leadership changes further intensified tensions within the association, according to sources.

His resignation follows the posting of unverified documents in social media, alleging that rivals had collaborated with the previous government for personal gain. Ahmed categorically denied it in his letter.

Russell T Ahmed had been reelected to the presidency of BASIS in May last for the 2024-26 term, having previously served three terms on the committee.

BASIS is not alone in leadership challenges. Other associations, including those representing e-commerce, computer merchants, and call centres, have also experienced leadership crises, with the Ministry of Commerce stepping in at times to appoint administrators to oversee elections.
