In a pre-budget proposal, the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) also sought withdrawal of VAT on e-commerce related transaction and on house rent of software and ITES companies to help the sector grow.
The proposals came in a meeting with National Board of Revenue (NBR) held in the city, chaired by NBR chairman Nojibur Rahman.
Secretary general of Basis Uttam Kumar Paul proposed tax exemption on e-commerce for three to five years, withdrawal of value added tax (VAT) on retail sales and increase the duty on import of software.
He also proposed to spend one to three per cent of the allocated fund of each ministry, department, directorate and agencies on automation and digitisation.
Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) secretary general Nazrul Islam Milon demanded separate HS code for IT products and withdrawal of VAT on the house rent of the association.
He also proposed to reduce tax at source on the ICT products, which is 5.0 per cent at present and collect 4.0 per cent source tax from the luxurious and non-essential ICT products.
Mr Milon requested to allocate Tk 9.50 billion for the private sector ICT in the upcoming budget.
Internet Service Provider Association Bangladesh (ISPAB) president Amirul Hakim proposed withdrawal of VAT on internet service use at consumer level.
Mobilephone Business Association president Nizam Uddin Jitu said 30 per cent of the total phone sets demand is imported illegally, causing revenue loss to the government and creating uneven competition for the businesses. He proposed to impose a duty of Tk 100-150 to prevent duty evasion.
