FE Report

Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) will conduct its second Rural Credit Survey from January 26 until February 09 this year to identify sources, demand and use of credit in rural areas of the country.

BBS will carry out the Rural Credit Survey 2012-2014 in 2,240 census areas of 483 upazilas in 56,000 borrower households at a cost of Tk 10.96 million. About 423 enumerators will collect field level data.

A two-day training session for the supervising officers began at the BBS conference room Friday in this connection where division level officials were present.

Statistics and Informatics Division (SID) Secretary Nojibur Rahman was present at the inauguration programme as the chief guest while BBS Director General Golam Mostafa Kamal was present as the special guest.

Rural Credit Survey Project Director Golam Mostafa made a brief presentation on the survey.

The main objectives of the survey are to identify the agricultural and non-agricultural credit borrower households, sources of rural credit and their role in rural economy, amount of agricultural and non-agricultural credit and use of credit, various data on the use of rural credit, the outstanding balance of borrowing households and identify the reasons for failing to repay loan, analyse the situation of borrower and non-borrower households according to land ownership and size of the family.

BBS has already spent Tk 2.23 million in FY 2012-13 and until June 2013, it spent Tk 2.15 million. In FY 2013-14, Tk 10.66 million will be released to complete the survey.

The first rural credit survey was conducted in 1987 and since then there has been no such initiative. In his speech of the chief guest said rural credit has been playing a vital role for the rural economy which is the main driving force of the Bangladesh economy.

In this context, the practical knowledge of rural credit distribution is necessary to formulate future credit distribution programmes by the government, especially agriculture loan.

The present survey will help know the institutional and non-institutional sources of rural credit and nature of their use.

Nojibur Rahman urged the trainees to seriously complete the training and provide real data which will help the government take up programmes for the greater benefit of rural people.
