Bangladeshi community living in North Carolina has called upon the US government to withdraw suspension of Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) imposed on Bangladeshis readymade garments.
They made the call at a gathering in Raleigh, North Carolina recently, according to a message received in Dhaka Saturday, reports BSS.
Congressman David Price, North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Randy Voller and Wake County Democratic Party Chairman Dan Blue were present at the gathering.
The Bangladeshi community leaders said though Bangladesh is recognised as a least developed country (LDC), its garments products have been experiencing the highest level import tariff in the US market.
"Many Sub-Saharan African countries have been awarded with trade preference. But, Bangladesh is being deprived of any kind of trade preference in the US market," the gathering was told.
The Bangladeshi community expressed their expectation that the US government would withdraw the GSP suspension on the readymade garments of Bangladesh.
With the help of Bangladeshi community members of North Carolina, Rashidul Islam Rubel, Member, State Executive Committee of North Carolina Democratic Party, organised the community gathering.
