BD, EEC meet to strengthen economic ties

The assembly took place under MoU signed in 2019

The first working group meeting between Bangla-desh and Eurasian Eco-nomic Commission (EEC) took place early this month at Moscow in Russia, aiming to strengthen economic and trade ties.

The two-day meeting was held at the EEC headquarters in Moscow on November 30-December 01, according to a commerce ministry note published on its website recently.

The EEC is the executive body of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) comprising five member-countries - Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia. Formed in 2015, the EEU is a market of 183 million people and has a land area of 20 million square kilometres.

Earlier, on May 31, 2019, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Bangladesh and EEC. The recent meeting was held in relation to the MoU.

Additional Secretary at the commerce ministry of Bangladesh Noor Md Mahbubul Haq and member of the board and minister for Integration and Macroeconomics Sergey Glaziev led their respective sides.

The meeting had a detailed discussion on the next action plan with an eye to increasing trade and economic cooperation under the MoU.

Besides, the Bangladesh side also discussed with the Russian federation to ease the existing tariff process, in order to export Bangladeshi products to the Russian market.

Senior officials of the commerce ministry and EEC participated in the meeting.
