Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will work together on food safety measures for the mutual benefits of the two countries.

As part of the move, the UAE's state minster for food safety affairs will have a meeting with State Minister for Fisheries And Livestock Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru in the city today (Tuesday).

"A meeting between our state minister for fisheries and livestock and the UAE's state minster for food safety affairs will be held on Tuesday and they will discuss the food safety measures," joint secretary of the ministry of fisheries and livestock Shefaul Karim told the FE.

Apart from the food safety measures, the Bangladesh side will request the UAE state minister to pursue his country's businessmen to import more items, such as fish and vegetables, from Bangladesh, ministry sources said.

A large number of people of the Indian sub-continent live in the oil-rich Arab state where there is a wide range of demand for fishes, meat, vegetables and fruits.

India exports a big chunk of these items to the UAE.

An official of the fisheries ministry said that Bangladesh has also a good scope for increasing its exports to the UAE.

At the meeting, the Bangladesh side is likely to urge the UAE to invest in the food processing sector for the mutual benefits of the two nations.

Bangladesh mainly exports knitwear, home textile, leather and leather goods, jute goods, agro-products and frozen food to the UAE, and imports animal products, mineral products, plastics and rubber articles.

Bangladesh exports goods worth around US$ 300 million and imports goods around $1000 million.
