Benazir's wife, daughters skip ACC quizzing, seek more time

FE REPORT | June 10, 2024 00:00:00

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed's wife Zeeshan Mirza and their two daughters did not appear before the Anti-Corruption (ACC) on Sunday, despite being summonsed over graft charges.

The family members of the ex-IGP sought more time from the ACC, said lawyer of the anti-graft watchdog Khushrid Alam Khan.

Upon considering their petition, the ACC granted them 15 days' time and asked them to appear before it to face interrogation on June 24, said the lawyer.

Earlier on June 6, the ACC fixed a new date for quizzing the former IGP.

The ACC asked Banazir to appear before it on June 23 to face interrogation over allegations of amassing huge properties beyond his known sources of income. The anti-graft watchdog on May 28 had summonsed Benazir and his family members to quiz over the graft allegations. The ACC asked the former IGP to appear before it on June 6 and his wife and two daughters on June 9.

Earlier on May 23, a Dhaka court had ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate properties under 83 deeds, which state 114 acres of land, and freeze 33 bank accounts under the names of Benazir and his family members.

Three days later, the same court ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate assets under 119 more deeds of Benazir and his family members in connection with alleged corruption.

It also directed them to confiscate eight wholly-owned and 15 partially-owned properties of Benazir, his wife Jissan Mirza, and his daughters.

However, it is said from different sources that Benazir and his family members had left the country on May 4 before the orders of the court passed.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court on June 6 granted a petition filed by the ACC seeking appointment of administrators (receivers) to look after the immovable properties of Benazir and his family members.
