Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) launches an exclusive fish market in the capital today (Thursday) to provide fresh and formalin-free fishes to the consumers, officials said.
BFDC is going to open the first-ever multi-storey fish market at Jatrabari in the city, built at a cost of around Tk 90 million.
"The market will be an exclusive one for selling different varieties of fishes for fulfilling the consumers' growing demands," BFDC chairman Dildar Ahmed told the FE on Wednesday.
He said over 100 shops in the market, mainly run by the private sector, will sell different varieties of fishes at competitive prices.
"We will conduct formalin test before allowing fishes to enter into the market."
The BFDC officials will ensure cleanliness and hygiene of the market so that consumers can purchase safe fishes from the market.
He further said apart from fishes, dry fishes and fish fry will also be sold at the market. There will be three to four BFDC-run shops in the market for selling different varieties of fishes.
"If we become successful, we will expand such market to other places of the country," he added.
