The BGMEA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) with a view to bringing sustainable development in the garment manufacturing industries in the country.
Bangladesh Garment Manufactures and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Vice-president (Finance) Riaz Bin Mahmud and Programme Coordinator of Promotion of Social and Environmental Standards in the Industry (PSES) of GIZ Magnus Schmid signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations in the city on Tuesday, reports BSS.
Under the MoU, the GIZ, an international enterprise operating in more than 130 countries worldwide, will implement a joint project undertaken by the governments of Bangladesh and the Federal Republic Germany to increase the environmental capacity of the local apparel industries, which are lagging behind to comply with the environmental issues.
A total of 16 apparel industries would come under the initiative and these industries would get support on some environmental issues like energy savings, improved chemical management issue, effluent treatment plant (ETP) operation and implementation.
"Implementation of the programme will bring a change in long-term environmental issues as we never want the growth of the apparel industries without environmental management," said the BGMEA vice-president.
