Prices of Hilsa, dry fish, chicken prices increased further days before the 'Pahela Baisakh' festival, traders said.
Pahela Baisakh is the first day of the Bangla year celebrated by the Bangladeshis with great enthusiasm.
Vegetable prices showed a mixed trend while other commodity prices remained stable on Friday.
Hilsa prices increased nearly by 100 per cent in the last seven days and 200 per cent in fifteen days, according to traders of kitchen markets in the city.
Big sized hilsa (900 gram+) was totally out of market while medium sized (650gram -800 gram) fish was sold at Tk 1200-1400 per piece.
Price of small sized (below 600 gram) fish also increased and was sold at Tk 600-700 per piece on Friday against Tk 450-600 seven days back, according to retail markets.
Retailers said big traders stored a huge volume of fish and later released them in the market.
The demand soared nearly by twenty times in last few days which caused the surge, many retailers said.
They also said that the price will reduce drastically just after the celebration.
Prices of chicken (farm, Pakistani, local) have increased by Tk 10-50 at per kg or per piece on Friday compared to that of its previous.
Farm chicken was sold at Tk 145-150 per kg, a medium sized Pakistani variety of chicken was sold at Tk 320-350 while a local variety of same sized was sold at Tk 420-450 per piece on the day.
Hafizul Islam, a chicken retailer at Nowabganjbazar in the city said that the price will decrease after Pahela Baisakh.
Prices of different varieties of dry fish also increased amid Pahela Baisakh festival as the food item is also being consumed a lot on the day.
Price of 'loitta' variety of dry fish increased to Tk 800--850 per kg which was Tk 700-750 seven days back. 'Chepa' variety price increased to 900-950 per kg-a Tk 100 increase in last ten days.
Vegetables prices oscillated by Tk 5-10 per kg throughout the week.
Moringa price reduced to Tk 50 per kg which was Tk 60 last week. Vegetable like pointed gourd price increased to Tk 40-45 per kg---a Tk 5 increase.
Prices of other major commodities including meats (excluding chicken), pulses, edible oil, sugar, salt, flour, spices, tea etc were stable this week comparing that of its previous.
