Biman Bangladesh Airlines has been searching for a new managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) from either Bangladeshi or foreign nationals, officials said.

The national flag carrier is looking for a new chief as Kevin John Steele -- the first foreign MD and CEO of Biman - has left his office recently.

"Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited has invited applications from deserving Bangladeshi and foreign nationals for appointment as MD and CEO on its website," general manager of Biman Mosharaf Hosen Khan told the FE.

He said advertisements have also been published in newspapers in this connection.

Interested candidates are requested to send their applications along with other required documents by May 16, 2014 to the Biman authorities, he said.

The prospective candidate should have minimum 20 years' experience in aviation industry, including 10 years in a senior management or directorial position.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon has recently formed a four-member search-committee, headed by Civil Aviation Secretary Khurshed Alam Chowdhury, to find out a new MD and CEO of Biman.

An official of Biman told the FE that they are particularly looking for a local person to be appointed as MD and CEO of Biman.

He said they have been searching for a Bangladesh citizen for the top post of Biman. If they fail to do so, then they would try to find a foreign national.

Kevin John Steele joined Biman in March 2013 on a two-year contract; but just having been in office for about 13 months he has resigned on health grounds.

Steele submitted his resignation in January as his family called him seriously to return home following his illness.

The Board of Directors of Biman has recently accepted his resignation, effective from April 17.

Steele was being paid Tk 1.8 million as monthly salary.

The British national was also provided with a flat in a posh area in Dhaka, transport facilities and 12 free business-class tickets a year.
