The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and GIZ, a German agency for international cooperation, have teamed up to develop and implement a roadmap for a sustainable growth of the country's knitwear sub-sector.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed recently between the BKMEA and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to this end, according to a statement.
The strategy development work will further strengthen BKMEA as a business association and help ensure that knitwear manufacturers continue to remain competitive in the global apparels trade as well as work towards contributing to achieving the export target of US$ 50 billion by 2021, helping the government achieve its 2021 vision, it added.
Highlighting the importance of the move, BKMEA president AKM Salim Osman said it would help BKMEA to streamline policies towards a sustainable knitwear industry.
"GIZ and BKMEA have been working together for many years for the improvement of social and environmental conditions in the RMG sector," said Rodney Reviere, programme coordinator of GIZ.
