The wage board for automobile and bakery workers has drafted its proposals, recommending Tk 5,930 and Tk 5,940 as monthly minimum wages for the workers of the two sectors respectively, officials said.
The board also proposed a five per cent annual increment for workers in the automobile workshops and the bakery, bread and confectionery sector.
It issued separate notifications in this connection last week and sought suggestions, if there is any, within 14 days.
The government set Tk 1,930 as the minimum monthly wage for the automobile workshop workers and Tk 2,120 for the bread and confectionery workers in 2009 and 2012 respectively, according to officials concerned.
"Although the proposed amount for the workers of automobile workshops is poor, we have agreed on it," Mahbubur Rahman Ismail, workers' representative on the wage board, said on Sunday.
The wage board has divided the automobile workshops into three categories: grade-I, grade-II and grade-III. The minimum wage has been recommended at Tk 5,930 for the unskilled helpers for the grade-three workshops that employ five to six hands, he added.
In its recommendations, the wage board has divided the workers into four categories-highly skilled, skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled.
The board has proposed Tk 5,930 at the district level and other areas and Tk 6,720 for divisional cities and city corporation areas as the minimum monthly wage for the unskilled workers in grade-III workshops.
The monthly wage includes Tk 3,450 as the basic pay, 60 per cent and 40 per cent of the basic pay as house rent in divisional cities and districts respectively, Tk 800 in medical allowance and Tk 400 and Tk 300 as transport allowance for divisional cities and districts respectively.
Automobile sector leaders said around 30,000 automobile workshops are in operation across the country, employing as many as 2.5 million workers.
In the bakery, bread and confectionery sector, the board has incorporated five grades of workers for automated factories, six grades for manually-run units and seven grades for semi-automated factories.
The board proposes Tk 5,940 as the minimum monthly wage for the grade-five workers of a manually-operated bakery or confectionery located at the district level and other areas and Tk 6,400 for those in divisional cities and city corporation areas.
