State-run tourist hotels and motels' reservation can now be done online as Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) introduced Sunday automation system for "faster and smooth services" to backpackers.

The national tourism agency under its project styled 'Integration of Automation System of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation' spent nearly Tk 52 million for upgrading its services, officials said.

Apart from enhancing services for tourists, e-tendering is also introduced for maintaining transparency in works in the sector.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon formally inaugurated the online registration system at a ceremony held in the conference room of the ministry.

He expressed his hope that the BPC would "move forward with the government's digital Bangladesh initiative".

Mr Menon asked the corporation officials to be cautious so that the newly-launched online system does not fall in "technical trouble" just after inauguration of online reservation for Biman's domestic routes.

Under the newly introduced online system, a customer can make reservation of BPC hotels and motels with payments through credit card, debit card, biKash or any other online banking.

Purchase of tender schedule and submission of admission form of the National Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (NHTTI) can also be done digitally.

Secretary of the ministry Khorsed Alam Chowdhury, chairman of BPC Aparup Chowdhury and other high officials of the ministry were among others present.
