BRAC WASH Programme and BRAC Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding recently to address water crisis in coastal and industrial areas.

In an effort to ensure access to clean water across Bangladesh, the BRAC WASH Programme and BRAC Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), says a press release.

The partnership between the two organisations aims to jointly work with water entrepreneurs and RMG factories of selected areas in Bangladesh to create access to finance by providing loan facilities whereby BRAC, through its WASH Programme, will cooperate to assist the bank in identifying suitable entrepreneurs or businesses.

This will address two broad areas such as lack of access to safe drinking water in coastal areas and increasing water pollution in industrial areas without proper effluent treatment plants (ETPs).

This partnership will address the gap between appropriate technologies and necessary financing for safe water in climate-vulnerable areas and efficient solutions for ETPs in industrial areas.

By extending financing to water entrepreneurs, the parties aim to facilitate establishment or upgradation of water treatment facilities and effluent treatment facilities integrated with enhanced technological solutions.

This pivotal step seeks to resolve the water contamination problem and aims to create employment opportunities in water treatment and distribution.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Hossain Ishrath Adib, Director, IDP and WASH, Md Zillur Rahman, Programme Head, WASH, Khadiza Ahmed, Programme Manager, WASH, Syed Abdul Momen, DMD & Head of SME, and Sabbir Hossain, DMD and Chief Operating Officer, BRAC Bank, and other senior officials from both the organisations held at the bank's head office in Dhaka.
