Agricultural loan disbursement by the state-owned Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) decreased by Tk 1.16 billion in nine months to March, the board data showed.
The fall in disbursement is mainly due to poor performance of the officials of the state entity, sources said.
The board has set a target to disburse agricultural loan worth Tk 9.72 billion for the FY 2013-14. Of the amount, the BRDB disbursed 63 per cent or Tk 6.12 billion against its target of Tk 7.29 billion in July-March period, according to the BRDB data.
A sizable amount was disbursed in March when the BRDB lent Tk 820 million out to farmers.
An official said the loan disbursement will exceed the target if the pace is persistent over the next three months.
The BRDB is the prime government agency engaged in rural development and poverty alleviation, a high official said.
The state entity basically operates by organising the small and marginal farmers into cooperative societies for increasing agricultural production through improved means and by forming formal or informal groups of landless men and distressed women to promote income generating activities in the rural areas, he added.
