The telecom regulator has given 30 days for renewing licences of 17 VSAT (very small aperture terminal) operators that have failed to renew the same within the stipulated deadline, sources said.
VSAT is a two-way satellite ground station or a stabilised maritime VSAT antenna with a dish antenna that is smaller than three metres. VSATs are used to transmit narrowband data or RFID data, or broadband data.
In a circular, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) recently said as these 17 organisations did not renew their license, all their services are illegal and punishable under the Telecom Act 2001.
The notice also said according to the country's existing law, the VSAT licences must be renewed every year.
A notice published by the Legal and Licensing Division of BTRC on its website on June 29 mentioned that these illegal VSAT operators must apply to renew their licences within the next 30 days. If any operator decides to discontinue their VSAT use, that should also be notified to the regulator.
If the organisations do not apply for renewal within the next 30 days, their licences will be permanently cancelled with no scope for further renewal, the notice added.
