Hailing the proposed budget for fiscal 2015-16, Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BWCCI) urged the government to reserve quota for women entrepreneurs in proposed economic zones, exempt them from paying tax and VAT on sales upto Tk 5.0 million and lower interest rate to the single-digit.
"BWCCI congratulates the finance minister and the government for increasing the minimum tax-free income limit up to Tk 300,000 instead of Tk 275,000 in the national budget for 2015-16," the chamber statement said.
However, as a national trade body of women entrepreneurs, BWCCI recommended certain issues to incorporate into the revised budget for the sake of women's development.
These include: reserved quota for women entrepreneurs in proposed economic zones, facilitating free registration for women entrepreneurs in international trade fairs while allowing them to carry the products of minimum Tk 500,000, exemption of tax and VAT fees up to sales on Tk 5.0 million for the business entities run by women entrepreneurs, exemption of tax to import machineries for women entrepreneurs, ensure the representation of women entrepreneurs in the Import Trade Control Committee, introduction of bank loan interest rate at 7.0-9.0 per cent for women entrepreneurs, and introduction of tax-free opportunity up to two years against the bank loan for women entrepreneurs.
The chamber also termed the government's initiatives to ensure the participation of 50 per cent women in all economic activities within 2021 a 'landmark' step toward women empowerment.
