The authorities of Central Cattle Breeding and Dairy Firm (CCBDF) have taken up a step to spread the new species of cow named 'beef breed species' across the country to meet the growing demand of cow meat.

Considering the growing demand of meat, CCBDF located at Savar, Dhaka, imported the new species of cow semen from Australia recently.

After importing the semen CCBDF authorities achieved a tremendous success by pushing the semen into the local cow. They have already stocked 103 cross-breed cows.

The meat of new species of cows will be perfect for consumption within 7-8 months whereas a local cow takes around two years to be matured, a high official of the firm told this correspondent.

"The cross-breed calf will gain 700 grams everyday within the age of less than one year and after one year it will gain 800-900 grams every day. The growth of cows will be 700-800kg within 22-25 months", Mizanur Rahman, an official of the firm told this correspondent.

Abul Kalam Azad, Deputy Director of the firm said, "We send the semen to the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) for research. After getting the final result we send the semen and also the cross-breed cows to different parts of the country."

"We contact the officials of BLRI frequently and they always give us positive result about the ongoing research," he said.

Mr. Azad also said, "As the population of the country is increasing rapidly the number of cows is not increasing proportionately, so the people in our country are deprived of beef required quantity of meat."

Dr. Mst. Parvin Mostari, a senior scientific officer of BLIR and also the main investigator of the research said, "Most of the works about the research have already been done. We will submit the final report very soon."

"We are very much optimistic that we will get the upbeat result and will be able to spread the semen across the country that will help Bangladesh to meet the additional demand of beef," she said.

"We will take another project to import more meat producing species very soon considering the additional demand of cow meat across the country," she added.

CCBDF was established in 1958 on 2613 acres of land beside the Dhaka-Aricha high away in front of the Jahangirnagar University (JU) with a view to meeting the milk demand of the country.
