The government is going to build the country's largest exhibition centre with Chinese assistance at Purbachal on the outskirts of the capital by June 2018, investing some Tk 7.96 billion, officials said.
The proposed Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre, to be built on 20 acres of land, will be a permanent establishment where the Dhaka International Trade Fair will be held every year.
Currently, the international trade fair is being held at the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area, just beside the Planning Commission.
The officials said the proposed permanent exhibition centre will have two big halls for the exhibitors.
The Chinese government would build the exhibition centre with its grant support, they said.
The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) recently sent a Tk 7.96 billion project proposal to the Planning Commission (PC) seeking approval of the permanent exhibition centre building project.
"We are scrutinising the proposal. If the project evaluation committee recommends for approval, then it will be placed before the executive committee of the national economic council for getting endorsement," said a PC official.
A MoC official said earlier they had decided to build the permanent exhibition centre at south-west corner of the old airport, close to the Bijoyswarani area of the city.
But the Bangladesh Air force strongly opposed the move forcing us to shift the place to the newly developed Purbachal city in the capital's north-eastern side, he added.
The ministry official said the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design has already prepared a design for Bangladesh's largest exhibition centre in Purbachal.
According to the design, the exhibition centre will have 806 permanent booths in two big halls. Each of the booth size will be 9.0 square metres.
The exhibition centre will have parking place for 1500 cars in front of the main halls. The car parking place will be on an open space.
Besides, the permanent exhibition centre will have conference rooms, auditorium, media room, canteen, and other necessary amenities for the customers.
Currently, the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC), situated at the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, is one of the biggest exhibition centres in Bangladesh.
This is the only multi-purpose convention facility in the country, having 17 venues for holding small to large-scale events like state functions, social events, seminars, conferences, product launches, annual general meetings, fairs, exhibitions, cultural programs and reality shows.
