The Cabinet Purchase Committee approved on Wednesday two proposals - one for appointment of a Chinese firm for repairing the inner-side of the Bangabandhu Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge and another O&M contract on scanner machines at the Chittagong Port, reports UNB.
The cabinet body approved the appointment of China Communication Construction Company (CCCC) for the repair of cracks developed in the inner-side of the Jamuna Bridge at a cost of Tk 1.09 billion (109 crore).
The same company earlier did the repair work on the surface level cracks in the bridge.
The cabinet body at a meeting, chaired by Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, gave nod to the proposal of the Bridges Division of the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry.
Cabinet Division additional secretary Mustafizur Rahman said the industries minister presided over the meeting as committee convener Finance Minister AMA Muhith was abroad.
Official sources said the cracks were first detected in the Jamuna Bridge in 2006, within eight years of completion of its construction.
The Chinese company got the job of repairing the surface level cracks on May 5, 2011 at a contract value of Tk 2.43 billion (243.45 crore). But later the contract value was enhanced by Tk 280 million. Now, the same company will do the repair of the inner cracks.
The committee approved another proposal of the Shipping Ministry to extend the operation and maintenance (O&M) contract on four scanner machines and 10 radiation detection devices at the Chittagong Port for another two years.
The two-year extension of the current contract will cost Tk 225 million, said the Cabinet additional secretary.
