Most of the shopping malls in the capital continue to remain closed after three days of Eid-ul- Fitr holidays that ended Wednesday.

On the other hand, business transactions in the shopping malls that opened on Saturday registered a poor volume of sale due to the absence of customers.

Shopping malls in Paltan, Kakrail, Malibagh, Elephant Road areas remained closed on the day. They will reopen today (Sunday), according to traders.

The New Market, Gausia, Chadni Chawk, Mouchack, Ramna Bhaban and Pir Yemeni market were opened but transaction was poor.

"We usually sell clothes worth Tk  50000 during normal days. But till 5:00 pm today (Saturday) we sold goods worth only Tk 5000," Md Lokman, a sales person at Pir Yemeni market told the FE on the day.

Traders hope that the volume of sale will increase within the next few weeks as most of the people had spent their salaries and bonuses on the purposes of Eid shopping that resulted in poor volume of business transactions.

Due to the closure of the shopping malls some customers have been forced to go to other shopping centres in different areas.

"I came to purchase a luggage bag for travelling abroad.  As the shopping mall in my area is closed I have come to Baitul Mukkarm market," Delwar Hossain, a resident in city's Jatrabari area told the FE.

Apart from the closure of most shopping malls, the makeshift shops in Gulistan, Purana Paltan areas were also closed as most of the traders left the city for their village homes for celebrating Eid with their near and dear ones.

Some makeshift shops were opened on the day. However, the transactions were very minimal as the customers mainly belong to limited income group of people who had spent most of their salaries and bonuses for Eid purposes.

"I used to sell T-shirts and other garment items worth between Tk 8000 and Tk 10000 during the Ramadan and other days. But I doubt whether the sale proceeds could be Tk 1000 today (Saturday)!," Md Fazlu Mia, a trader in  Gulistan area told the FE.
