Poultry sector insiders expressed their grave concern at a programme Saturday over the slow progress in the experimental avian influenza vaccination programme that was extended to ten districts recently.
They said after attaining success in two districts, the programme has been extended to eight new districts, but lack of drugs is holding back the trial programme.
These observations came at a view exchange meeting held at a city hotel organised by the Breeders Aasiation of Bangladesh.
Fisheries and livestock minister Mohammed Sayedul Hoque spoke as the chief guest while state minister for the ministry Narayan Chandra Chand as special guest.
Minister Mohamamad Sayedul Hoque said that poultry sector had a great contribution to the country's food and nutrition security.
"When agricultural land is shrinking and population is increasing, the sector raised a ray of hope that a little portion of land can ensure protein deficiency and give millions of people their livelihood," he said .
He urged the poultry sector insiders to work hand in hand with the government to raise productivity and ensure food security of the country.
Narayan Chandra Chand said that the fisheries and poultry sectors have a great contribution in improving mother and child health.
He said the sectors incurred a huge loss during the political turmoil last year which should be compensated.
Moshiur Rahman, president of BAB said after achieving success in avian influenza vaccination programme by the private sectors in two districts, the government extended the programme to eight new districts including Dhaka, Manikganj, Narsingdi, Tangail, Bogra, Joypurhat and Chittagong.
The Drug Administration is not giving us permission to import vaccine causing a total halt to the trial vaccination, he said.
Saydur Rahman Babu, secretary of BAB and senior vice president of the organisation Fazle Rahim Khan Shariar, among others also spoke.
