Construction work going on amid manifold problems

Some 60 per cent work of the two wings of the 8.25 kilometre-long Moghbazar-Mouchak Flyover has been completed amid manifold problems, officials said.

Project Director Nazmul Alam said as the construction work is going on along with vehicular movement at the sites, people are facing troubles due to mud and traffic jam.

However, they are trying to speed up the ground-level works to reduce further suffering in the coming rainy season, he said.

He said construction of the 2.1 km long Satrasta to Ramna via Moghbazar (W04) and 2.2 km long Janakantha office in Eskaton to Mouchak via Moghbazar (W06) is progressing fast.

An official at the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) said it is always difficult to carry on construction works on the busy roads as there is no space for bypass.

He said usually extra time for construction is given for the projects in the busy places but in case of the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover this has not been maintained.

The LGED under the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives is implementing the Tk 7.73 billion project which has employed local and foreign construction firms.

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) is providing Tk 3.75 billion for the project while OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) giving Tk 1.96 billion and the government of Bangladesh the remaining Tk 2.0 billion.

Managing Director of Toma Construction Company Limited Ataur Rahman Bhuiyan (Manik) said construction work of the project could not be carried out in a faster way since July last due to the underground pipelines and cables, installed nearly a decade ago by utility service-providers.

He said, "We had to sit idle for many days as there were no designs from the government in time due to problems in the underground utility services."

He said some changes were made in the main design during construction work not to hamper the existing utility services.

A passerby while crossing the Malibagh level crossing point told the FE Sunday that he was stuck in the traffic signal for an hour.

He said in the coming rainy season there would be more problem as there would be water-logging on the roads with mud and the traffic problems will be intensified.
