Country sees 7,500 tonnes more fishes annually, JS told

About 7,500 tonnes of additional fishes are being produced yearly in the country as a result of releasing nearly 3,500 tonnes of fish fries in the last five years.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque disclosed the figure at the Jatiya Sangsad on Monday while replying to a question of treasury bench member Amina Ahmed, reports BSS.
The present government has for the first time in the country undertaken Beel Nurture Programme through the Department of Fisheries (DoF), he told the Sangsad.
He said 534 sanctuaries were established through various development projects in different rivers and inland open water bodies.
Besides, the minister said 154 tonnes of fish fries were released into 136 natural water bodies after re-excavation in 38 districts and 75 upazilas.
He said the present government has taken different programmes to preserve and increases the production of sweet water fish.
Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute has developed technology of artificial breeding and farming of 18 extinct species of sweet water fishes, he added.
Replying to another question of Md Faridul Haque Khan, the minister said eight organisations are working to apply the law enacted to protect Jatka or Hilsha fish fries.
The organisations are Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Coast Guard, police, RAB, Bangladesh Air Force, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), district and upazila administration and DoF.
He said the production of fishes in the country increased by 33.04 per cent during the last six years.
The minister also told the Sangsad that the government has set up 136 hatcheries across the country, while there are 861 hatcheries in the private sector.
