CHITTAGONG, Jan 7: The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) today assured the business community of taking the responsibility for any untoward incident while transporting containerised cargoes from the port to the Pangaon Inland Container Terminal (ICT).
The assurance came from CPA Chairman Rear Admiral Nizam Uddin Ahmed as the businesses said that transportation of cargoes between the Pangaon ICT and the Chittagong Port has no insurance coverage.
BGMEA president Md Atiqul Alam said the readymade garment sector (RMG) is facing a very critical time now due to political violence and enhancement of wages. Many RMG factories are now set to be closed down.
The CPA organised the meeting with all stakeholders of the port at the CPA board room today.
The Chairman said the CPA will take risks for all containerised cargoes and ensure safe movement of cargoes to the destinations. The port authority has taken all precautionary measures for the benefit of  importers and exporters, he said.
"We have developed the Pangaon ICT for providing greater service to exporters and importers with a view to reaching the cargoes to destinations through the river routes as an alternative step for transportation of goods, apart from the existing Dhaka-Chittagong highway," he said.
"So it is the duty of the CPA to ensure transportation of cargoes safely through the river-ways," he said.
Exporters and importers said transportation of raw materials and export products has been facing serious obstructions for the last few years. They said they are scared of attacks on vehicles carrying cargoes as opposition political parties have enforced blockades on both roads and waterways.
Presided over by Rear Admiral Nizam Uddin Ahmed, the meeting was also attended by BGMEA acting president Md Hatem, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Mahbubul Alam and BGMEA first vice president Nasir Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, among others.
