CHATTOGRAM, May 17: The Chattogram district administration will hand over 500.9863 acres of khas land to the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) to build the Bay Terminal at a token price within the next week.

The CPA has already deposited three challans totalling Tk 30 million in favour of the Chattogram district administration.

Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Abul Bashar Mohammed Fakhruzzaman said, "CPA has paid the token price so we will hand over the land as soon as possible after completing the process."

Sources said, the dispute over the handing over of the land was resolved in February last.

CPA had decided to set up a new terminal named "Bay Terminal" on the Patenga coastline with all modern port facilities to mobilise port activities and reduce transportation costs.

The 'Bay Terminal' to be built on an area of 900 acres would allow big ships that now cannot berth at the jetties of the Chittagong Port.

The new terminal is expected to increase the container handling capacity of the port by up to 5 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) yearly from the existing 3.1 million TEUs.

The new terminal is also expected to contribute 2 to 3 per cent to the growth of the national economy.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction of the terminal in 2018.
