CHATTOGRAM, May 09: Despite the government's permission to open the shops from May 10 next, the merchant associations in Chattogram have decided not to open markets from the day due to fear of virus outbreak.
As per decision of the combined meeting of the associations, the markets and shopping malls in the port city will remain closed till May 31 next.
Sources said the merchant associations and shop owners' association of markets in the port city held a meeting at Mimi Super Market premises by maintaining the social distance on May 8 last. The leaders of the trade bodies took the decision to not open the markets from May 10 next in fear of coronavirus outbreak.
The meeting also took a decision to close the shopping malls and markets till May 31 next.
The meeting was chaired by President of Mimi Super Market Merchant Association Mohammed Jakir Hossain.
Among others President of Sanmar Ocean City Merchant Association Asad Iftekhar, General Secretary Mohammed Hasan, President and General Secretary of Chittagong Shopping Complex Merchant Association Shahidul Alam and Golam Mostafa, President and Senior Vice President of Chittagong Central Plaza Merchant Association Shahed Ali and Md Akter Khan, General Secretary of Finlay Square Merchant Association Mohammed Jwel Rana, President and General Secretary of Amin Centre Merchant Association Shahed Ali and Shahedul Alam, Directors of Afmi Plaza Merchant Association Swapon Muhuri and Kaisar Mohammed Ibrahim, President and General Secretary of Akterujjaman Centre Merchant Association Azizul Haque and Sharif Chowdhury, leaders of Singapore Bangkok Market Merchant Association Nurul Alam, Najim Uddin, Vice President of Chittagong Kallol Super Market Association Humyon Kabir, General Secretary of Mimi Super Market Merchant Association A K M Abdul Hanan and Vice President Dilip Kumar Dhar addressed the meeting.
Sources said, Chattogram New Market, Reajuddin Bazar, Teri Bazar, Boxirhat, Sanmar Ocean City, Akterujjaman Centre, Singapore Bangkok Markets, Lucky Plaza, CEPZ Bay Shopping centre, Amin Centre, Finlay Centre, Afmi Plaza, Mimi Super Market, Kallol Super Market, Chittagong Shopping Complex, Central Plaza, Kallol Super Market, Concord Town Centre, etc will remained closed till May 31 next and the shops will not be opened for Eid shopping.
Sayed Khurshid Alam, General Secretary of Bangladesh Shop Owners Association, Chattogram district branch said, "The leaders of trade bodies of all markets in Chattogram city have decided to close their shops and markets till May 31 in a meeting due to the corona outbreak. So, the markets and shopping malls will not be opened before eid."
President of Sanmar Ocean City Merchant Association and Finlay Market Merchant Association Iftekhar Hossain Asad said, "We have taken a decision in this regard. We will not open the market before Eid and the markets will remain closed till May 31 next due to the coronavirus outbreak."
