The market of desktop computer in the country has been shrinking over the years as laptops, notebooks and tablets are occupying its market share, business insiders have said.

According to them, the market ratio of desktops and laptops has now stood at 35:65 against 45:55 just three years back.

Currently, total sales of desktops have come down to 10 to 15 thousand per month compared to 20 to 25 thousand earlier while those of laptops  and tablets increased to 40 to 45 thousand from 25 to 30 thousand, Secretary General of Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) Nazrul Islam Milon told the FE.

However, Managing Director of Ryans Computers Ahmed Hasan told the FE that the demand of desktop computer is decreasing as many buyers are now turning to portable devices such as laptops, notebooks and tablets.

He mentioned that according to the sales situation of his company the percentage of desktop sale is 30 per cent while that of laptop is 70 per cent.  He, however, said that the percentage was 40 per cent and 60 per cent respectively two years ago.

According to statistics of BCS, the size of the computer market in Bangladesh is around Tk 32 billion (3,200 crore) and its growth rate is more than 15 per cent.

The BCS secretary general termed the market one of the most potential and growing markets of the country.
