CHITTAGONG, Mar 9: Communications Minister Obaidul Quader said the works of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway four-lanning will be completed by next December.
"The 4-Lanning of the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway is no more a dream. It's going to be completed by December 2014," he said while visiting the Chittagong International Trade Fair in the city Sunday morning.
President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mahbubul Alam told the Minister that Dhaka-Chittagong Highway is the economic lifeline of the country and its ongoing work should be completed as early as possible.
Alam also requested the minister to renovate other important road from Bangladesh Oxygen area to Chittagong University.
Obaidul Quader told chamber leaders that 4-lanning works of the second Kanchpur Bridge, second Meghna Bridge and Second Gomati Bridge are going on at the cost of Tk 90 billion funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
"The works of 50 kilo meters of the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway have been completed. Piling work of 182 kilo meters of the 192-kilo meter long project has already been completed out of which 76-kilo meter base work and 97-kilo meter sub-base has been accomplished," he said.
Besides, renovation of 15 bridges out of 23 bridges on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway has already been completed, he said.
The minister apprised the CCCI leaders of the government's plan to construct the tunnel under the River Karnaphuli on the "two-city" basis to link up the city with the south bank of the river, noting that the feasibility study has already been done under the monitoring of the CCC.
Quader said an additional amount of Tk 200 million will be allocated in the upcoming budget for completion of the on-going projects of 82-kilo meter long Marine Drive and the Oxygen-Hathazari Road.
