Ministry of textiles and jute will launch a week-long operation next month against the non-compliers of 'Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010'across the country.
The operation plan comes after poor response from the stakeholders in using jute-made bags as packaging materials. Earlier, the authority had conducted several mobile-court raids and fined traders, wholesalers and millers for non-compliance with the law.
The decision came on Sunday at an inter-ministerial meeting, chaired by state minister for Textiles and Jute Mirza Azam held at the Jute Ministry, the ministry said in a statement.
To enforce the law, the mobile court drives will be conducted at the Upazila and district level from October 25 to 31, the state minister told the meeting.
The junior minister said the jute sector is facing a major setback, as the use of jute-made products is still negligible.
He also sought cooperation from the people to help enforce the law.
Jute secretary Farid Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, director general of Department of Jute Muazzem Hossain, among others, were present at the meeting.
The packaging law has made it mandatory for using jute bags in packing paddy, rice, wheat, maize, fertiliser and sugar.
Each violator will face imprisonment of upto one year or a penalty of Tk 50,000 or both the penalties will be imposed considering the degree of non-compliance.
