DU emerges as champion

Kathmandu University School of Law secures runners-up title

Winners of the BIAC International Inter-University Arbitration Contest 2023 pose at the Trophy and Certificate Distribution Ceremony at the BIAC office in Dhaka on Sunday.

The Trophy and Certificate Distribution Ceremony for the BIAC International Inter-University Arbitration Contest 2023 was held at the BIAC office in Dhaka on Sunday, says a press release.

This year marks the fourth consecutive year of the contest, which featured participation from eight leading national and international universities from Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

The Dhaka University (DU) became the champion of the contest, while Kathmandu University School of Law secured the runners-up title.

The event was sponsored by BRAC Bank PLC, Mutual Trust Bank PLC, and IFIC Bank PLC, and was judged by both international and national arbitrators.

Justice Md. Abu Ahmed Jamadar, former Justice of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, was present as the chief guest and Justice A.F.M Abdur Rahman, former Justice of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, as the chief arbitrator.

Justice Md. Abu Ahmed Jamadar praised BIAC's role in promoting ADR in Bangladesh, and applauded their initiative in organising the international contest.

Justice A.F.M Abdur Rahman shared his wonderful experience as the chief arbitrator in the contest and appreciated BIAC for taking such a significant step to excel the skills of young students, who are future lawyers and arbitrators.

Md. Bakhteyar Hossain, Deputy Managing Director & Chief Operating Officer of Mutual Trust Bank, and S.M. Alamgir Hassan, Head of Legal Affairs at IFIC Bank, emphasised the importance of ADR and commended BIAC for encouraging young learners in this field.

In his concluding remarks, Muhammad A. (Rumee) Ali, Vice Chairman of BIAC, reaffirmed BIAC's commitment to continuing such contests in the future to equip aspiring legal professionals with essential ADR skills.

Student representatives from the University of Dhaka and Kathmandu University School of Law, Nepal, expressed their gratitude to BIAC for organising the contest, which provided them with valuable experience and exposure to global best practices in ADR.

Justice Md. Abu Ahmed Jamadar, Justice A.F.M Abdur Rahman, and Muhammad A. (Rumee) Ali gave away the trophies to the Champion and Runners-up teams and presented certificates of appreciation to other participating teams. Mementos were also given to the esteemed arbitrators, the coach of the Champion team, the chief guest, and the chief arbitrator.

Distinguished arbitrators of the contest, including Imdadul Haque Khan, Saqeb Mahbub, HM Shanjid Siddique, and Faran Md. Araf, attended the event, along with participants from Bhuiyan Academy, North South University, Prime University, and Sonargaon University. Priyanka Roy, Senior Counsel, and Moyee Mina Haque, Assistant Counsel and host from BIAC, were also present.
