‘Each person consumes 62.58 grams of fish a day’

Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in fish production against the demand of fish per day and person, says the fisheries and livestock minister, reports BSS.
Each person of the country consumes 62.58 grams of fish per day while quantity is 60gm fixed by food and health ministry's policies, Narayon Chandra Chanda said on Wednesday.
He was replying to a starred question from treasury bench member M Abdul Latif in Jatiya Sangsad (parliament).
He said as per the report of the Department of Fisheries, 4.134 million (41.34 lakh) tonnes of fish was produced in the country in the last fiscal year.
Fish production in 2016-2017 exceeded the fiscal year's target of 4.5 million (40.50 lakh tones), he informed.
He said that Bangladesh achieved self-sufficiency in meat production too.
To meet the demand of protein, the Department of Livestock Services set a target of meat production at 7.135 million (71.35 lakh) tonnes
in fiscal year 2016-17 (FY17), he mentioned.
"The present government has undertaken various initiatives to meet protein and increase export earnings side by side alleviating poverty in the country," he told the House.
Besides, activities for patterning cattle are going on regularly to increase meat production across the country, the minister said.
The government is monitoring the activity at union level on the basis of list prepared, he added.
