Eid shopping gains momentum in port city -

CHATTOGRAM, Apr 21: Eid shopping is gaining momentum in the port city as buyers are rushing to different shopping centers to purchase dresses of their choices for them and their near and dear ones.

There are 200 permanent shopping centres and makeshift hawkers' markets in the port city. Besides, there are numerous roadside shops that sell attires.

Eid-ul-Fitr is likely to be observed in Bangladesh on May 3, depending on sighting of Shawal moon.

As coronavirus seems to be disappearing from the country, the city-dwellers are going to markets to buy Eid items defying summer heat during Ramadan, the month of fasting and abstinence.

They are purchasing Sarees, Salwar-Kamizes, Punjabis, 3-piece, Topis and children's attires, besides utensils, bed sheets, curtains and some other items for home decoration.

The city's main shopping centres are New Market, Mimi Super Market, Afmi Plaza, Sanmar Ocean City, Finlay Square, Amin Centre, Central Plaza, Amin Centre, Reajuddin Bazar, Chawckview Market, Moti Tower Market, Keari Shopping Complex, Singapore Market, Laki Plaza, Aarong, Cats Eye, Chittagong Shopping Complex, Teri Bazar, Hawkers Market and some other centres at GEC Intersection, Bahaddarhat and Chittagong Export Processing Zone areas which are attracting most of the Eid shoppers this year.

From the 15th of Ramadan and onward, the city shopping centers will remain open from 10:00am to 1:00am every day till the night before the morning of the Eid.

Market authorities illuminated their markets and decorated those with flowers, balloons and other beautiful items to attract shoppers.

Shoppers are also going to a large number of makeshift shops as well as fashion houses which sprang up in almost every areas of the city recently.

A large numbers of shoppers are buying Sarees, Punjabis, 3-piece and children's wears.

However, prices of these items are not very high this year compared to the past 3-4 years, customers said.

Central Plaza, Mimi Super Market, Ocean City, New Market, Lucky Plaza and Teri Bazar are the first choice of women for Eid shopping this year. Most of the buyers there have come from middle- and lower-middle-class families.

According to traders of Mimi Super Market, Afmi Plaza and Chittagong Shopping Complex, Salwar-Kamij is priced at between Tk 3,000 and Tk 30,000 a price while Sarees between Tk 3,000 to Tk 0.1 million (Tk 1 lakh). Lehenga is the costliest of all dresses this year in Chattogram. Prices of Lehenga have ranged from Tk 50,000 to Tk 0.2 million (Tk 200,000).

Hundreds of customers most of them women are gathering at Teri Bazar, Mimi Super Market, Afmi Plaza, Lucky Plaza and Central Plaza every day.

Rehnuma Akter from the DC's Hills area bought a 2-piece for herself from Mimi Super Market at Tk 20,000.

She said that the price of all kinds of women's wear was not very high this year.

Punjabis are available at different shopping malls including Aarong, Khwaja, I fashion, Boro Shaheb, Khaki and Pakistani. Punjabis are priced between at Tk 2,000 to over Tk 15,000 per piece.
