Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun attended a discussion on 'Shared Vision for Better World - Standards for SDGs' organised by Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution at its head office in the city on Thursday on the occasion of World Standards Day. State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumdar, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Barrister Shamim Sattar and Ministry of Industries Additional Secretary Sheikh Foyzul Amin were the special guests. Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Thursday called upon the businesses traders to ensure standard and quality of products in the interest of the country.
He also urged them to change the mindset of producing low quality products as well as making excessive profits.
He made the call at a discussion on "Shared Vision for a Better World - Standards for SDGs", organised marking the World Standard Day at the head office of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) in the capital.
The minister stressed the need for importing standard raw materials to produce quality products and warned that the government would not allow the import of sub-standard products to save the country from becoming a dumping station.
"If we want to remain in the competition, we have to maintain our products' quality. If we improve our products' quality, we would be able to expand our trade," he said, adding that at the end of the day producers are also being treated as consumers.
He also stressed that the sub-standard products should not be marketed under political influence.
Mr Humayun asked the BSTI officials to strengthen their efforts to ensure the quality of products, including those of cosmetics items.
As per the government directives, he said the BSTI has started taking initiatives for achieving the goals of Smart Bangladesh 2041.
State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder urged the traders to improve the quality of products and not to produce sub-standard products.
Presiding over the event, BSTI Director General Md Abdus Sattar said the BSTI has taken initiatives to strengthen the capacity of its 10 regional offices by setting up 68 international standard laboratories to examine the quality of local products.
It is possible to build smart standards, smart industries and smart Bangladesh through joint efforts, he added.
President of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Barrister Sameer Sattar emphasised on ensuring the quality of products after lifting tariff facilities once the country graduated to a developing country in 2026.
Additional Secretary of industries (MoI) Sheikh Fayejul Amin was present at the meeting as special guest while BSTI Director (Admin and Standard) Md Tahir Jamil offered vote of thanks.
