Bangladesh has urged the investors of the European Union (EU) countries to invest in the country's environment-friendly shipbuilding and recycling industries.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu made the appeal when EU Ambassador in Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon met him at his office in the city on Sunday, reports UNB.

The industries minister said the government has taken an initiative to build modern shipbuilding and recycling industries in the areas adjacent to Patuakhali Paira Bandar and Patenga in Chittagong.

"The EU investors can come up for joint venture investment in these areas," the minister said while interacting with the EU ambassador.

During the meeting, they discussed various bilateral issues relating to diversification of Bangladesh's industrial sector, skill development in the country's readymade garment (RMG) industry and rights of forming unions in the Export Processing Zones (EPZs).

The EU diplomat appreciated Bangladesh's progress so far made in the areas of working conditions in the RMG sector.

The EU envoy said Bangladesh can utilise the potential of the shipbuilding industry, pharmaceuticals, information technology (IT) and leather industry.
