CHITTAGONG, Sep 1: Former city mayor and Awami League Chittagong city unit president ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury today alleged that vested quarters in the government are conspiring against Chittagong and Chittagong Port.
The vested quarters have been hatching conspiracy to take away the proposed deep-sea port from Sonadia Island of Cox's Bazar to Paira and the Asian Highway route through Sylhet although it is originally planned through Chittagong, he said while speaking at a press conference at his Chasma Hill residence in the city Monday morning.
The ruling party leader said the proposed Sonadia deep-sea port was pledged in the election manifesto of the party which was announced by party president Sheikh Hasina during her election campaign in Chittagong.
"We will not oppose the construction of Paira port, but it should not be done at the cost of Sonadia. Sonadia is the ideal place for deep-sea port," he said.
Mohiuddin said Chittagong Port is the gateway to South Asia. The proposed Asian Highway will be connected with Myanmar and China's Kunming province through this port while Chittagong port is the transit port for seven sisters of India.
