Fake cosmetics factory busted in city

A mobile team of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) unearthed a fake cosmetics factory at Rahmatganj in the old part of the capital on Monday.

The factory, "Nithi Cosmetics", located at Haji Ballu road, Rahmatganj, was producing sub-standard and fake cosmetics of renowned brands like Tibet, Fair and Lovely and Nova and some other Indian brands.

The mobile team seized fake cosmetic products, chemicals and machines worth about Tk 3.0 million.

The mobile court also sentenced two persons to two months' jail and fined them Tk 0.6 million.

However, the owner of the factory Md Nasim managed to flee.

Farhad Hossain, an official of BSTI, told the media that toxic chemicals were being used to produce the fake cosmetics.

The factory had been producing fake cosmetics for more than three years without any approval from the authorities concerned.
