FBCCI pushes for easier customs procedures

FE REPORT | May 27, 2024 00:00:00

The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) urged the government to ensure a more business-friendly environment and reduce the cost of doing business through the proper implementation of the Customs Act-2023.

The apex trade body also requested necessary amendments to the act to create a hassle-free business environment in the country.

FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam made the request during a motivational workshop on the Customs Act 2023 at FBCCI's Motijheel office on Sunday.

The workshop was jointly organised by the FBCCI and the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

In his welcome address, FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam said the Customs Act is very important in easing the business environment and reducing costs.

"We believe the new customs law will play a major role in speeding up trade," he said.

Mr Alam said businesses are now being disrupted due to complications related to HS codes, declarations and other areas. "We actually favour implementing 100 per cent automation in customs management," he commented.

The FBCCI president said, "No matter how well-written the law is, if not implemented properly, it will not benefit those concerned."

He added that the workshop addressed proposals from the private sector regarding amendments before the act's implementation.

Guest speaker at the workshop, NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Munim said the revenue board would consider logical proposals from the business community for amendments.

However, he added that fines are ineffective in maintaining order in business in many cases. "That is why larger fines are imposed in some cases, but they must be logical."

NBR Chairman urged businesses to be familiar with the Customs Act 2023. "The business community should make formal complaints rather than making informal complaints," he advised.
