First aid training important for shipbreaking workers' safety


In a bid to enhance workplace safety and save lives, a first aid training programme targeting shipbreaking workers was conducted at Chattogram's Sitakunda Upazila Conference Hall on Thursday.
Organized by the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS), the initiative underscores the critical importance of prompt and effective first aid in the hazardous shipbreaking industry, according to a press release.
Sitakunda Upazila Nirbahi Officer KM Rafiqul Islam, speaking as the chief guest, emphasized the intrinsic dangers lurking in shipbreaking work.
Presiding over the ceremony, Comrade Tapan Dutta, convener of Shipbreaking Workers Trade Union Forum, highlighted the necessity of initiatives in ensuring the safety of shipbreaking labourers.
Fazlul Kabir Mintu, coordinator of Shipbreaking Workers' Occupational Health and Safety Information Center, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the pivotal role of immediate medical intervention in the event of any accident.
The training sessions, facilitated by Senior Station Officer Nurul Alam Dulal and Senior Station Officer Abdullah Al Mamun from the Fire Service and Civil Defense, were aimed to equip 270 shipbreaking workers with essential first aid skills.
Dr. Mohammad Shaheen Chowdhury, Kohinoor Mahmud, BILS Director, and AM Najim Uddin, Chairman of BILS-LRSC Center Coordination Committee, were among the dignitaries present at the programme.
