Fish, lentil, potato, vegetable prices up

Prices of river fish, lentil, potato and some summer vegetables increased on Friday compared to that of its last price ceiling.

Onion prices declined while meat prices maintained the higher trend.

Prices of fish including Shing, Magur, Golsha, Shoul, Pabda, Tengra, Bali, Puti, Kajoli, Batashi, Mola, Foli and other varieties increased significantly in a week which traders were attributing to supply crunch.

Prices of all kinds of fish declined after the Pahela Baishakh festival that held on April 14 last. But the prices o f riverian fish again started to increase, according to key kitchen markets.

Pabda was sold at Tk950-1000, Golsha at Tk450-500, Tengra at Tk400-450, Shing and Magur at Tk800-850 and Shoul at Tk400-450 per kg based on their size on Friday---Tk80-120 hike in a week.

Price of Hilsa also witnessed a hike by Tk50-100 per piece or at per kg in last seven days.

Md Arman, a fish trader at Showarighat fish wholesale market told the FE that supply of fish declined significantly following a low catch in the rivers and beels.

"Golsha, Tengra fish were sold at Tk350-380 per kg at Mawoa Ghat on Friday morning which were below Tk300 a week ago. Supply of fish declined," he said.

Bangladesh Fish Traders Association president Golam Mortaza Montu told the FE that the government has imposed ban on fishing in big five sanctuaries and its adjacent places under its Hilsa conservation programme which is the key reason behind the hike in river fish prices.

Price of potato further increased by Tk2 per kg and sold at Tk20-22 per kg on the day. Onion prices declined slightly by Tk2-3 per kg in a week.

Local Faridpuri (Haali) variety was sold at Tk30-32 while Indian and Burmese ones were traded at Tk26-30 per kg on the day.

Lentil of imported Nepalese variety price increased to Tk112-116 per kg which was 104-108 per kg a week back.

Local variety of lentil was sold at Tk92-96, local broken at Tk90-92 per kg while imported course varieties were sold at Tk76-80 per kg---Tk4-6 hike in last seven days.
