Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) has sought intervention of the government to ensure smooth transportation of 100 per cent exportable frozen food items to different places of the country, officials said.
BFFEA President Md Aminullah has sent a letter to State Minister for the ministry of home affairs (MoHA) Asaduzzaman Khan requesting the latter to take necessary steps in this connection.
"We have sought help from the government for smooth transportation of our frozen shrimp and fish for the greater interest of the country's export sector," Mr Aminullah told the FE Sunday over phone.
However, when asked, the BFFEA president declined to comment about the amount of financial losses incurred due to hassles faced while transporting the frozen food items.
Frozen shrimp and fish are exported to different countries of the world from Bangladesh. The entrepreneurs of the sector have to transport the foods in refrigerated vans for sending the items swiftly to various places situated in the Chittagong and Khulna belts before export.
Sources said the traffic police every now and then seize frozen shrimp and fish carrying refrigerated vans on way to Chittagong and Khulna on various excuses. They also file cases against the drivers of the vehicles. The law enforcers even do not pay heed to the drivers although they show fitness certificates, route permits, papers of registration and blue books of their vehicles.
As a result, the quality of the items deteriorates, causing substantial financial loss and wastage of time on the way to transportation, the sources said.
The government should take tough measures to prevent such incidents for the sake of the country's economy, they added.
Meanwhile, an official at the MoHA said, "We've got a letter from the BFFEA and we are now working on the issue for taking next course of action".
