The Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company has found gas at four levels after drilling a well in Noakhali's Sonaimuri Upazila, reports bdnews24.com.
The flare stack was lit at the well near Wasekpur village in Ambarnagar Union on Monday, according to Md Asaduzzaman, the Begumganj-4 (West) valuation, well digging and development officer.
The digging of the well was officially inaugurated on Apr 29, he said. The drilling completed ahead of schedule and now each layer of the well will be tested to determine the gas reserve.
The official says he hopes to be able to give 'good news to the nation' after the testing.
BAPEX says it expects to initially extract 10 million cubic feet of gas per day from each of the four zones of the well and connect it to the national grid through Bakhrabad.
Over 200 engineers, officials, employees, and labourers from state-owned organisation BAPEX are engaged in the work of digging wells and extracting gas.
