Germany to provide €52.5m for climate project

FE REPORT | April 18, 2025 00:00:00

Germany will provide Euro 52.5 million (approximately Tk 7.24 billion) to Bangladesh for a climate change adaptation project.

A financial agreement in this regard was signed between the governments of Bangladesh and Germany at Economic Relations Division (ERD) on Wednesday, a statement said.

ERD Secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky and German Ambassador to Bangladesh Achim Tröster signed the agreement.

Under this agreement, the fund will be disbursed for the project 'Climate Change Adapted Urban Development Programme VIII'.

This is the first funding after the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) of Bangladesh - German Climate and Development Partnership (CDP), signed by the two governments in December 2024.

The project under this fund will support local government institutions to strengthen the adaptive capacity.

The project also aims to reduce the effects of climate change onto the vulnerable population by improving their living conditions.

The funding will also help climate-sensitive planning and implementation of infrastructure projects for climate adaptation. The fund can also be used for replenishments and future follow-up projects of German Cooperation.
