The government may enact specific laws to ensure optimum and proper use of land, especially agricultural land.
"Unplanned urbanisation and setting up of mills and factories have been posing a great threat to arable land and hampering activities of the service-oriented organisations."
Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said this while exchanging views with the officials of Urban Development Directorate in the city Thursday, reports BSS.
The minister said ensuring civic amenities to the citizens had largely been hampered in 340 upazilas across the country due to unplanned housing, construction of shopping malls and other structures.
Earlier, the meeting was told that a high-level committee had been working to formulate a national development plan to prevent unplanned urbanisation and ensure optimum use of land across the country.
A presentation on overall development planning of Cox's Bazar and Saint Martin's Island was made in the meeting.
The Urban Development Directorate (UDD) has made the plan with provisions that nobody would be allowed to construct permanent structures within 500 metres of the sea shore while development programme had to be initiated by putting especial emphasis on protecting environment there.
In the plan, the Saint Martin's Island has been divided into three parts where the middle part would be used by the tourists while "Chhera Deep (Island)" has been kept for carrying out research activities.
The minister expressed satisfaction with the plan and he asked the authorities concerned to formulate a complete plan to ensure optimum use of land across the country.
