Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has said the government is considering exporting jackfruit following bumper production of the seasonal fruit in the country during the current season.

The minister said this while inaugurating a three-day 'Fruit Tree Fair' in Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur district on Sunday, reports BSS.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and the upazila administration jointly organised the fair at Pirgachha Upazila parishad ground with a view to encouraging people for planting more fruit-bearing trees.

Tipu Munshi said the country needs to attain autarky in fruit production to meet up the nutrition demand of the people.

Bangladesh has also immense scope for exporting many delicious varieties of fruits to earn foreign currency.

The minister mentioned that Bangladesh is now exporting rice and potato after meeting the local demands.

With achieving self-sufficiency in food we should attain self-reliance in fruit production, he said.

He said the government is extending all support to the farmers for mechanising the agriculture and using latest technologies to boost up production of all crops in the country.

Pirgachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jasmine Prodhan was in the chair while Upazila Chairman Shah Md. Mahbubar Rahman, agriculture officers Shamimur Rahman and Lokam Alam were present at the programme and spoke.
