The government has drafted a national occupational safety and health (OSH) profile, aiming to summarise all related policies and laws of the country for better understanding of OSH compliance mechanism, officials said.
The first national OSH profile 2019 is expected to act as the basis for analysing the current OSH status in the country and develop a national plan of action for better management of OSH in the coming years, they added.
Though there is no separate chapter on OSH in Bangladesh Labour Act, the issues are weaved throughout the rules as a binding thread to orchestrate the importance of ensuring health and safety in the workplaces in Bangladesh, they added.
The Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishment (DIFE) under the labour ministry in cooperation with International Labour Organization (ILO) drafted the first national OSH profile.
State minister for labour Munnojan Sufian has recently finalised the draft profile, ministry officials said, adding that the printed copy of the profile would be available in December.
In a statement, she said the profile would be a documentary to know about the real situation of the country's industrial units. It would help take next course of action and ease the tasks of OSH institute that already set up at Rajshahi.
The profile incorporated OSH policy, related provisions of the law and information on workplace safety, workers' welfare and activities of a number of government agencies.
