The government has intended to acquire technological efficiency in the power and energy sector after registering a significant growth particularly in electricity generation, Prime Minister's energy advisor Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said Monday.
"We need to develop skilled manpower and utilise the best technology to solve not only the existing problems but also for the future ones," he told a seminar at Bidyut Bhaban in the city.
Bangladesh Energy and Power Research Council (EPRC), a new body under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, arranged the seminar titled 'The Role of EPRC in Promoting Applied Research and the Benefits Derived by the Industry and Universities', presided over by its chairman Shahin Ahmed Chowdhury.
Three engineers have been provided with certificates in the function for their new innovative ideas over efficiency of electricity generation and its efficient use.
A non-resident Bangla-deshi (NRB) and senior vice president of Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) of the USA Dr Arshad Mansoor delivered the keynote presentation at the seminar, while power secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus also spoke on the occasion.
Explaining the government's plan over floating the new organization, Mr Chowdhury said the government will promote new ideas and research works in power and energy sector to improve technological efficiency.
Encouraging the young engineers for their interest to engage in research work, he said that the government would always incentivise their innovative works by providing financial and technological supports.
"That's why we have created the EPRC as a new body offering the opportunity to utilise their skills for innovative works", he added.
Power secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus said the researchers should not always be waiting for financial incentives for their works.
"None of the famous scientists in the history had worked for incentives. Rather, incentives followed them after their inventions," he told the seminar.
Shahin Ahmed Chowdhury said the EPRC has offered opportunity to the students of different universities to conduct research works.
